Gerard    Angoh 

Honourable Joseph Gerard Angoh GOSK.
Practiced as a barrister at law before all Courts of Mauritius from 1980 to 1983. Was appointed as district magistrate in 1983, Master and Registrar of the Supreme Court in 2004.
Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2009.
Appointed Supreme Court Judge in 2010. Retired from the service in January 2020.
Former part-time lecturer at the university of Mauritius in Labour and Environmental law.
Chairperson of the Financial Intelligent Unit Review Panel. Chairperson of the Financial Services Review Panel.
Chairperson of the Court of Investigation on the recent sinking of tug Sir Gaêtan.
Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration established under the Hague Convention.
Member of the Advisory Committee of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (Geneva)
Elevated as Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK) by the Republic of Mauritius.


Gerard Angoh is a talented and multi-faceted person. He leads a very active lifestyle, engaging in cycling, hiking, and mountain climbing early in the morning before heading off to work. He enjoys accompanying his wife on art journeys to countries such as Malaysia, Myanmar, China,,the Philippines, Indonesia, and Iran. The arts have been a long-time passion of his, and after retiring as a judge from the Supreme Court of Mauritius in 2020, he continues to chair legal boards on a part-time basis while dedicating more time to his artistic pursuits.

            I.     Education background

•   BA Degree in law & economics, University of Bournemouth, England, 1978

•   Bar Vocational Diploma at the Council of Legal Education and Middle Temple Inn of Courts, London, England

•   Called to the English Bar in 1979

•   Called to the Mauritian Bar in 1980

          II.     Main professional activities

•   In private practice as a lawyer from 1980 to 1983

•   Joined the Judiciary in 1983

•   Served as Magistrate at various District Courts and at the Intermediate Court for numerous years.

•   Worked at the State Law Office as Senior and Principal State Law Officer.

•   Master and Registrar of the Supreme Court from 2006 to 2010

•   Director of Public Prosecutions from 2010 to 2012

•   Judge of the Supreme Court from 2012 to 2014

•   Presiding judge of the Commercial Division of the Supreme Court from 2014 to 2020

         III.     Current position/function

•   Chairperson of the Institute for Judicial and Legal Officers (IJLS)

•   One of the mandate of the IJLS is to provide lectures and courses for continuous learnings to members of the legal professions in all aspects of the law (CPD hours)

•   Special attention is given to provide lectures and courses on Human Rights matters to members of the legal profession.

•   Chairperson of the Financial Intelligence Unit

•   Chairperson of the Financial Services Commission

•   Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration

•   Elevated to the rank of Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK) in 2022

         IV.     Main activities in the field of human rights

•   Attended numerous Human Rights conferences and participated in group discussions in Vienna on human rights matters on behalf of the Government of Mauritius.
